According to lore, Dudley Mecum, the first leader of the band, named it
"Wolverine Orchestra" because they very often played the tune "Wolverine
Blues," a jazz standard
composed by Jelly Roll Morton and the brothers Benjamin Franklin "Reb"
Spikes and John Curry Spikes.
